“What I found waiting for me was a entirely new adventure. The sights, the sounds, the history, the people, the food… everything was different from what I had experienced in any other country I had visited. Although there was a bit of a learning curve at first because I knew zip-zero-null of the language, I found myself excited to wake up the next day to a variety of stories waiting to told and lived. …Indonesia for me was some of the new “places and faces” that I had met this summer. I feel that Although it sounds odd, I feel I am a better and bigger person because of what I was able to be a part of this summer via USINDO in Indonesia. I will never regret travelling here, and would not regret going again.”

“By the end of the course, we all found ourselves deeply immersed within the local Javanese culture. Between camping trips to far-flung islands, excursions to Solo City, and much, much more, we all experienced Java in a deeply impactful way. Now that I am back in my home city, I find myself missing Yogyakarta very much. …Indonesia is a wonderful and complex nation, defying and overcoming its’ differences to maintain national unity. I remain fascinated by Indonesia, and am excited to do research for my master’s thesis in Java in a couple years’ time. To next years’ participants: selamat belajar bahasa Indonesia!”

“It’s amazing how two months in Indonesia has instilled such an interest in the country in me. I went from not knowing about Indonesia to know wanting to learn more about its history, to wanting to learn more about Javanese culture and apply for a Fulbright to do so. I want to come back again someday and explore more places in Indonesia and meet more people. I feel so connected and at home in a country I never thought I would have the chance to visit. Now that I’ve had this experience, I want to be able to be able to tell those around me about Indonesia, and hopefully get them as excited and interested about the country as I am now.”
