About United States of America
The United States is the world’s third most populous nation, second largest democracy, and has the world’s largest national economy. As a result of large scale immigration from all corners of the globe, it is now one of the most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations in the world. The population of the United States today is approximately 320 million.
The United States is a constitution-based federal republic with a strong democratic tradition. The American colonies of Great Britain declared independence in 1776, and formal recognition was granted with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The democratic Constitution was ratified in 1788. George Washington became the first president in 1789, and the Bill of Rights – which forbade restrictions on personal freedom and guaranteed certain legal protections, including freedom of religion, free speech, free assembly and association, and the right to due process of law – was adopted in 1791.
