On July 22, the Indonesian election officials declared Jakarta Governor, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the new president of Indonesia. Approximately 135 million voters went to the polls on July 9th to choose President Yudhoyono’s successor in Indonesia’s third direct presidential election. Yesterday’s announcement follows a closely contested presidential campaign, with both candidates Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto swiftly claiming victory based on conflicting quick counts from several pollsters.
What can be said about the reasons for Jokowi’s win in this highly contested race? What are the early views regarding the domestic, economic, and foreign policies that Indonesia’s new administration may pursue? What do the results convey about Indonesia’s democracy?
We are privileged to have Emeritus Professor R. William Liddle join us on July 24 to provide his perspective on the election, how and why the win was achieved, and his early views regarding the policies of the new administration.
Please join us for this important Open Forum.
