Indonesia’s attention is riveted on the October 20th inauguration of Joko Widodo, following a highly competitive July election in which nearly 70% of the Indonesian electorate cast their vote, and with an unprecedented level of civil society participation.

The mobilization of Indonesia’s civil society took place not only during the election campaign but carried through after the election.  It fully utilized social media, and was both an urban and rural phenomenon. Participation occurred through independent civil society organizations’ observation of substantive issues, such as anti-corruption and legal reform, and through community-level groups’ scrutiny of electoral results.  The role of civil society groups appears to have become so deeply rooted that it may extend beyond the inauguration, and provide community-level checks and balances on both the new administration and the opposition coalition.

What can we learn from the role of civil society in Indonesia’s election and beyond?  What appears to be the role of civil society groups in furthering Indonesia’s democratic governance?

Please join us at this Open Forum, which will give us a deeper understanding of the power of public participation and civil society during the 2014 elections and in today’s Indonesia.

This event is open and free of charge. To register, please kindly RSVP HERE by 5 p.m. October 20, 2014.
