Special Open Forum Luncheon – Indonesia toward 2014: The View from the Gerindra Party
Hashim Djojohadikusumo Deputy Chairman, Governing Board, Gerindra Party
As we approach the 2014 Presidential elections in Indonesia, interest in the contending parties and their views is greatly increasing among both Indonesians and Americans interested in Indonesia. USINDO’s Open Forum Series on the 2014 elections welcomes prominent figures and leaders from all Indonesian political parties, as well as experts and pollsters, to present their perspective on the upcoming election and on Indonesian developments. On July 17 USINDO hosted Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Deputy Chairman of the Gerindra Party’s Governing Board. Gerindra (Gerakan Indonesia Raya or Great Indonesia Movement), is led by Lt. General (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto, who co-founded the party in 2008 with Mr. Djojohadikusumo, his brother. It is one of the two new parties which passed the threshold test in the 2009 elections enabling them to be seated in parliament. Gen. Prabowo is a potential candidate for President of Indonesia in 2014. Various Indonesian polls consistently rank him as one of the leading potential candidates. Mr. Djojohadikusumo spoke on the Gerindra Party’s views, his assessment of the prospects of the Gerindra Party and of Gen. Prabowo in the 2014 legislative and presidential elections, and the overall 2014 political landscape.
