Barbara Harvey

In both her Foreign Service and academic careers Barbara Harvey specialized on Indonesia. She served twice in Surabaya, East Java, with the US Information Service, 1960-64, and as Principal Officer at the Consulate, 1984-87, and was Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Jakarta, 1993-97.

Ms. Harvey taught Indonesian politics at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, 1974-77. Her Cornell dissertation on the Darul Islam rebellion in South Sulawesi (1950-65), and a monograph on the Permesta rebellion (1957-61), have been translated into Indonesian and published by Grafiti Pers. She continues to follow Indonesian foreign policy, domestic political and social developments, internal rebellions, regionalism, and decentralization.
