Indonesia has prioritized robust industrialization as an engine to drive the country’s economic development. Indonesia’s government is targeting 6% GDP growth in 2027, up from the 5.4% target in 2026, and set an even more ambitious target of 8% economic growth by 2028. Industrial policy takes a central role in Indonesia’s long-term strategy under the Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision to achieve greater self-sufficiency.
To meet its ambitious goals, Indonesia has broadened its use of industrial policy through a mix of policy tools. These include trade and investment policy instruments, fiscal incentives, subsidized inputs, technological upgrading support, skill development programs, and the establishment of industrial estates and special economic zones. What are the implications of Indonesia's industrial policy for the country’s long-term capabilities and competitiveness? Are they enough to achieve Indonesia's ambitious targets for investment and economic growth, given current headwinds? How can Indonesia's industrial policies be strengthened?
This Open Forum will provide new insights based on recent research into how Indonesia can effectively implement and improve its industrial policy. It will provide expert analysis of current industrialization efforts and offer recommendations for enhancing Indonesia’s approach, practices, and outcomes.
Our presenters have recently completed an in-depth study on Indonesia's industrial policies and will present their results and recommendations. Dr. Deasy Pane, currently a fellow at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), will present an overview of their research and findings. Dr. Maria Monica Wihardja, fellow and co-coordinator of the media, technology and society program at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore who co-authored the study, will present additional comments and insights on Indonesia’s industrial policy approach.
After their presentations, we will take questions from the online audience. USINDO’s President, Ambassador David Merrill, will moderate this discussion. Please join us for this timely and interesting discussion.
