Though the U.S Presidential Election is not until November 2016, anticipation of this political event is already generating excitement in America and across the world. Twenty one candidates, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties, have openly announced their candidacy to become President Obama’s successor and have launched their campaigns.
Political debate and public discourse is heating up in the run-up to the election. Candidates have begun articulating their stances on important issues such as the economy, immigration, gun control, health care, foreign policy, and climate change. Given that U.S. policies often carry implications for other nations, the race is drawing global interest, and Indonesia is no exception.
Despite the fact that the U.S. and Indonesia have presidential systems of government and embrace democratic principles, there are several major differences on how elections are held in each country.
What is the electoral process for the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election? What is the timeline and what are the key dates to watch? Who are the candidates and what are their prospects? What are the central issues being discussed?

- Ms. Chas Anderson, Former Executive Director of Minnesota House of Representatives and Co-Founder/Partner of MZA+Co
