Asia is urbanizing rapidly; in just five years, half of Asia’s population will live in cities. The governance challenges accompanying this shift are enormous, including the need to provide services to a growing population, generate revenue to address needs, and create a resilient urban system that can mitigate the effects of climate change and natural disasters. As part of a series of events on technology and development, experts will discuss innovative methods for using data and technology to help achieve these goals. In this context, the Foundation will discuss its approach to urban programming and introduce a recent study on strategic uses of data for urban governance. The Foundation’s Sri Lanka Country Representative will highlight an ongoing program which supports citizens’ use of Electronic Citizen Report Cards (eCRC) to provide municipal governments with real-time feedback on urban services via an Android-based mobile application. For cash-strapped local councils, the eCRC provides a quick, portable, convenient, and cost-effective way to find out whether urban services are reaching the public.
