As the world’s largest archipelagic country, Indonesia has great potential in its maritime resources, a high development priority in President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s vision of Indonesia as a maritime power. But the presence of global climate variability could have an impact on these resources, and may increase the prevalence of natural disasters. At the international level, Indonesia has taken a leading policy position in recent years on climate change, both in multilateral and bilateral fora.  Domestically, policy changes in climate change governance have taken place during the first 100 days of Jokowi’s administration. Jokowi’s presidential decree on the structural changes involving Indonesia’s REDD+ Agency and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry have been met with mixed reactions within Indonesia and sparked a debate on whether the efficiency move is a strategic or political one.

USINDO is pleased to welcome Dr. Budy P. Resosudarmo, HKS Senior Fellow, Associate Professor and Head of ANU Indonesia Project, to familiarize us with Indonesia’s current climate change policy. Dr. Resosudarmo will review some of the major forces that lead to and shaped Indonesia’s climate change commitments, the institutions involved in the implementation of Indonesia’s climate change policy, the links with international cooperation such as the Letter of Intent with the Norway Government and the formation of ASEAN Economic Community, and the recent development of climate change policies and governance under Jokowi’s presidency.  His talk will be followed by Questions and Answers.

This will be a timely opportunity to learn about Indonesia’s commitments in climate change, ahead of the upcoming US-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership Joint Commission Meeting in Washington in June, and the international fora on the Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations in September and on climate change in Paris in December.
