The Birth of the Indonesian Nation, 1945-49: Perspectives on the Role of the United States

1945-49 were the turbulent and formative years of the creation of the Indonesian nation.  The United States played an evolving role within that period that is known by relatively few.  Influenced by events on the ground such as Dutch police actions, the US moved from a position of pro-Dutch indifference to a position of supporting Indonesian independence, using US Marshall Plan aid to the Netherlands to reinforce its position.  At the request of the parties, the US also facilitated the Dutch-Indonesian-UN negotiations aboard the USS Renville.

USINDO is extremely fortunate to have Professor Ron Spector of George Washington University speak in Jakarta for this event, which will be of interest to all who wish to view current US-Indonesia relations and partnership in the perspective of their roots 60 years ago.  Please join us for this event, either at 6:00 p.m. in Menteng, or at 10:00 a.m. at UI.
